Suryapet Orphanage - Tenth Report

Sunday – This morning after Chapel, I asked the orphan boys to take some photos with the iPhone. They loved it; snapping away like any other youngsters in the world, yet their lives are so different.

I visited the local villages in the afternoon where some of the youngsters came from. They are of course, very poor, yet they welcomed the camera crew into their homes (the entourage is getting bigger) with their Southern Indian smiles.  I noted that their outdoor cooking areas, which surrounds a wood fire; is kept immaculately clean, whilst their cows are tied up only a few feet away. Children play in their bare feet, and then stop and pose for the cameras. They seem to appear from nowhere!

I go to the Orphanage after dark to teach a little computing. I explain to the older children, aged from 12 to 14 years, that in addition to the Indian School Curriculum Computer Programmes, they should learn to use Word and Excel. So, the lesson begins… 13 eager students listen and then create their own first spreadsheet. They help each, tussle a little, as you would expect for the next go, and collectively achieve a quality piece of work. Well done!

After dinner at Samson’s house, he suggested I see the children asleep. I am glad I did, it puts my mind at rest. They looked contented. Hey, it may be a little disturbing to us in the UK, but I am happy they are being cared for. Night nite little ones…
