Suryapet Orphanage - Eighth Report

Friday - The documentary is taking shape; I spent the morning at the Orphanage interviewing Pastor Samson and his son John, who both speak good English. Their dedication to the children is clear; I keep religion to a minimum, although it is very important to them and this is respected by both of us.

The afternoon begins with me interviewing the older (11/12 years) boys and girls who seem to be the leaders. They care for the little ones, are unbelievably helpful and can be seen organising the games. Actually, they have already featured quite heavily in the Blogs, which is not surprising. Their short stories, told in their own language and then translated by John, about their backgrounds was heart felt. They expressed how they enjoy being ‘at home’ in the Orphanage, appreciate being cared for and their friendship for each other; is wonderful to hear. It just makes you realise the importance of the, mostly volunteer, staff. Next was Shiva talking about his encounter with the snake, showing proudly his distorted finger and describing the length of the snake with his outstretched arms. I ask him to look sad, but with his permanent smile, this was going to be a challenge. Lastly, they introduce their friends, girls hugging each other and boys holding each other’s little hands.

The children, whilst not being interviewed were in charge of the Cameras with Roll, Cut and ‘That’s a wrap’ as part of their new English vocabulary. The Sound engineer didn’t really do anything, but enjoyed having the headphones on and nodding at the appropriate time. I intended to finish the filming then until I see other children picking some fruit and vegetable in their cultivated field. As the sun sets, I enter their dormitories to the sound of them singing, organised by themselves and purely for their own entertainment…
