Suryapet Orphanage - Third Report

Saturday -

Same greeting, same emotions, as much enthusiasm as ever. In such a short time some children have formed a special bond, their eyes sparkle with the words, ‘remember me’ and of course, how can I not. Today, as a special treat they receive a small packet of biscuits, most eat, but one boy carefully puts them in his pencil box for later. Then they go off to lessons in their little green uniforms, which seems to be their only clothes. I film them working with as much enthusiasm as ever, apart from the odd child that has fallen asleep; nobody wakes them, but just gently cares for them.

I meet all the teachers for lunch. They all have brought food in for a special dinner. I thank them for the food, but mostly for their dedication to the children; not only for their excellent teaching, but also the care and love them bring every day.

In the afternoon, I introduce some older boys, 10 to 14, to non-stop cricket with the aim that they would teach the younger ones. The first round is played with much skill with some great batting and tremendous catches. The game is closely watch by a flock of tiny children, so keen and anxious to join in. Then with a nod of the head, we are joined by fifty more, excited, so beautiful and having so much fun! Not forgetting the girls, I demonstrate my limited skipping skills; they humour me and decide it would be better to perform for me. Next, I am summoned to play Volleyball, led by the Bus Driver, and his two teams of athletic looking children. The place is buzzing.

I leave with a pile of drawings that they have done for me, it blows your mind...
